CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means)
Training for Providers
Firearms are the most common method for suicide in America. Given the ready access to firearms that is common in American households, the more widespread use of means safety interventions may be a necessary tool to reverse the accelerating rates of suicide.
The Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) clinical workshop is a 4-hour training designed for professionals in mental health, medical, and human services. Its goal is to equip participants with strategies to reduce access to firearms and dangerous medications during periods of elevated suicide risk.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
List 4 reasons why including means reduction strategies is a critical component of responding to suicide risk.
Discuss strategies for increasing means safety with individuals at risk for suicide and their families.
Incorporate means reduction strategies into existing evidence-based safety planning interventions.
Describe when to utilize law enforcement for the implementation of firearm restraining orders in Illinois.
